Tarpon Ramshackle Plein Air | 9×12 | Oil on Linen Panel

Inspiration for Tarpon Ramshackle

Although focusing primarily on working boats, I do enjoy finding slightly different nautical subject matter like Tarpon Ramshackle. To be honest, I have no information about this particular boat or its purpose. I traveled to Tarpon Springs for a day of plain air painting, and this decaying form nestled amongst the bushes caught my eye. Interesting textures usually call to me, and architectural subjects in disrepair tend to have lots of it.  I think that’s why I enjoy painting working boats so much. Pleasure craft are beautiful in form (the boat’s “lines” I believe is the proper term), but working boats have so much variety in texture and color!

Grecian Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs prides itself as the Greek capital of Florida; historic downtown contains Greek culture on every street corner. Bakeries boast baklava, dolmades, spanakopita, and much more, and I avail myself of one or two of these delicacies on each visit.
