Seville Lamplight | 11×14 | Oil on Linen

Inspiration for Seville Lamplight

I began Seville Lamplight en plein air at Pensacola’s Seville Square. The lamps turned on as the day approached the “golden hour,” creating a magical glow. The deep blues and greens of the foliage beautifully set off the reds and oranges of sunlight on fallen leaves and bricks. Peace reigned, and a timeless quality pervaded.

Pensacola’s Seville Park

Seville Park is a happenin’ place year-round! In the summer “Evenings in Seville Square” draws crowds to the park every Thursday night from May through July. Check out the event’s Facebook page for more information! Another huge annual event held in Seville Park is the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival. Conceived in 1972 by a group of art patrons, the “Great Gulf Coast” moniker was suggested by News Journal editor J. Earle Bowden to give the event a regional identity. The first festival was held in September 1973 in the parking lot of the Municipal Auditorium that stood at the south end of Palafox Street where Plaza de Luna is now. The Festival later moved to Plaza Ferdinand before settling in its current home in Seville Square. Learn all about the Arts Festival at www.ggaf.org!
