Winter on Little Sabine | 11×14 | Oil on Linen Panel

Inspiration for Winter on Little Sabine

Winter days in Florida, like the morning I painted Winter on Little Sabine, often provide wonderful plein air conditions. (Contrasted with the other two-thirds of the year, when painting outside could lead to spontaneous combustion.) Little Sabine Bay lies just to the right of the Bob Sikes Bridge in Pensacola, as you drive out to our beautiful beaches. Although primarily lined by private residences, a painter can still manage find a little spot or two to set up an easel. I particularly enjoyed painting the textures of the trees, brush, and reeds on this occasion. Playing with the different methods of applying oil paint will remain one of my life-long joys and explorations.
