Live Oak Pool | 9×12 | Oil on Linen Panel
Inspiration for Live Oak Pool
I began painting Live Oak Pool en plain air at the Naval Live Oaks National Seashore. The beautiful reflection of the clear blue sky on a shallow, brackish pool really struck me. As always, I frolicked about with my brushes while putting down the amazing textures of the grasses and bushes! I started painting this scene in August, so the clean, vibrant greens are extremely prevalent. With heavily verdant scenes, it is important to start painting on location, from life. Photo references overpower the green hues while undermining the subtle oranges, reds, and purples found in nature. A mentor in college once told me something like “find the oranges in your greens in your landscapes.” This didn’t make sense at the time; however, as I’ve grown and painted more from life, I’ve found his advice invaluable.
Live Oak Pool Earmarked for Charity
Live Oak Pool was finished just in time for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida’s BIG Gala, “A Night in Wonderland.” Every year, I donate a painting to charitable causes around Pensacola, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is a frequent recipient. The BIG Gala is a black-tie affair which raises support for the area’s leader in one-to-one youth services. “Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” In 2015-2016, Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentored 650 children in Northwest Florida. Studies show Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs have proven positive academic and behavioral outcomes. The Hilton on Pensacola Beach hosted the BIG Gala on January 13, 2017, with Amy and Stan Connally serving as the honorary chairs. Stan is Chairman, President, and CEO of Gulf Power Company.
