Boa Deep C | 9×12 | Oil on Panel

Inspiration for Boa Deep C

I started Boa Deep C en plein air and wrapped it up in the studio. Lot of Permanent Red Medium to play with in there—I especially loved the ship’s reflection in the dark water! The bright blue sky, vibrant hull, and clean white superstructure are what drew me to paint this scene. I heavily cropped the boat to attempt to emphasize its massive size. Sort of like,  “It’s so big I couldn’t fit it into the picture!” Looking at it now, the piece is really rather patriotic too—if you live in the United States. Or France also, I suppose. Or the Netherlands. 😀

Technical Information about the Vessel

Chevron designed the Boa Deep C as an offshore support vessel that supports Chevron’s deepwater offshore developments in the Gulf of Mexico. The ship has an overall length of 120 meters, gross tonnage of 12,400 tons, and a helideck designed for a Super Puma/S61 helicopter. The vessel’s facilities include a cinema, gymnasium and sauna. The ship has two work-class remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) hangars on its port and starboard, which house Oceaneering Millenium-designed ROVs rated at 3,000m water depth!
