A Curiosity in Port | 9×12 | Oil on Linen Panel

Inspiration for A Curiosity in Port

I started A Curiosity in Port en plein air, the second painting of the ship Deep Blue. (View the first painting, Blue is Red.) Besides my usual keenest to paint big ships, this guy looked like it had a ferris wheel on deck! Colossal ship meets carnival ride, count me in! Turns out the vessel lays pipe for undersea construction. I still prefer to think of it as a floating county fair. 😉

Tech Specs

The Deep Blue hails from Nassau, Bahamas. According to Ship-Technology.com, “The CSO Deep Blue is the world’s largest purpose-built ultra deepwater pipelay and subsea construction vessel. It can lay flowlines and umbilicals, and support developments in water depths ranging from 75m to 2,500m. The vessel is owned and operated by Technip Marine.” Click here to learn more about the Deep Blue!
